Tornado Response, Virginia Beach and Fort Story, VA

April 2023 – An EF-3 tornado with 140-150 peak winds touched down in Virginia Beach, First Landing State Park, and Fort Story on April 30, 2023.  There were no injuries or casualties, but it caused a large amount of damage to homes and vehicles, downed hundreds of trees and some power lines, and created gas leaks.  110 homes were damaged with 7 completely destroyed and 24 with major damage.  On April 30, the City of Virginia Beach alerted SEVA VOAD and Virginia VOAD that there might be unmet needs.  A need for food in Fort Story was identified by local churches, and long-term needs, including counseling, may be needed in the areas impacted.

To date, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, Team Rubicon, and Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia have responded.
