Food Distribution, Virginia Beach
Aug 9, 2023 – Virginia VOAD member Team Rubicon supported a food distribution at The Gathering at Scott Memorial United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. The church is an affiliate of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. The event served 378 cars and 22 walk-ups. A total of 1711 people received food.

Tornado Response, Virginia Beach and Fort Story, VA
April 2023 – An EF-3 tornado with 140-150 peak winds touched down in Virginia Beach, First Landing State Park, and Fort Story on April 30, 2023. There were no injuries or casualties, but it caused a large amount of damage to homes and vehicles, downed hundreds of trees and some power lines, and created gas leaks. 110 homes were damaged with 7 completely destroyed and 24 with major damage. On April 30, the City of Virginia Beach alerted SEVA VOAD and Virginia VOAD that there might be unmet needs.
Organizations that responded:
- Mercy Chefs provided meals for first responders, survivors, and disaster relief workers.
- The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and Team Rubicon provided food for military and support personnel in Fort Story.
- Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia activated it’s disaster case management team to assist any survivors needing long-term recovery assistance.
